Natacha Thomas' first short film as a director has recently begun making the rounds of european festivals, starting in Holland at the Roosendaal Shortfilm Festival. It has also been receiving its fair share of reviews online.
As a cinematographer Thomas' film presented me with an intriguing challenge. From the get go it was clear that the film was going to play on visual cues to deliver it's message. A strong visual scheme was well established by the characters themselves, with one representing Blue Beard and the other Little Red Riding hood in a tango battle to the death.
The challenge was in matching a specific tone of blue with a specific tone of red to get the look of the film just right. A process of searching through references turned into a series of tests using Arri SkyPanels to find just the right colors, which, once graded, gave the film it's striking look.
Lots of thanks to Maya Bonfanti at Cininter and Kim Marc Huynh who graded the project for supporting us in the test process.
Looking forward to a long festival run for RED TALE.
